SF-902 is DeVenny's Choice for Testing High-performance Racing Engines

DeVenny's Automotive Inc. in Staunton, Virginia specializes in high-performance racing engines ranging from All-out Drag, Oval Track, and Pro Street Competition. They also offer internal parts coating. Owner Roger DeVenny has designed and built countless Chevys, Fords, and Chryslers from small blocks to monster big blocks for over 30 years.

Established in 1984, DeVenny's Automotive has state-of-the art equipment for designing and building extremely powerful and reliable racing engines or OEM engines. Roger has an in-house machine shop where he does all the machine work himself. He uses the SuperFlow 902 XConsole engine dyno to test and tweak the racing motors he builds.

Roger is currently the engine builder for Davis Racing out of Delray, West Virginia. Gerald Davis competes weekly at Winchester Speedway.

Roger bought one of the very first SuperFlow 902 XConsole dynamometer systems in 2003. "I talked to the three top dyno manufacturers, and SuperFlow was the best choice for my needs," said Roger. "Steve Matthiesen [SuperFlow VP Sales] put together the biggest, baddest dyno available at that time, which is capable of 3,000 hp and 2,000 ft-lbs. of torque."

Working from Steve's advice, Roger built his own test cell with key features such as:
  • 6,000-gallon in-ground water tank

  • 4-ft. exhaust fan with custom duct work

  • Ceiling mount air turbine that draws air from the controlled environment control room--this provides accurate, consistent, repeatable testing in all seasons

"All of my race engines are tuned on the SuperFlow dyno which ensures maximum performance for the racer. I experiment with different setups to make the most horsepower," says Roger. "Today's engine build has to have a dyno to ensure maximum horsepower. When you are able to show a customer how his engine performs, it gives him confidence in what he is getting. Being able to offer this service increases business."

"As an engine builder, I would advise fellow engine builders to take advantage of any SuperFlow dyno. If an engine builder were thinking of purchasing a dyno, I would highly recommend SuperFlow. The company tech support is very professional and resolves problems quickly. Steve Matthiesen, Brad Browning, Brett Williamson, and David Blackburn provide outstanding customer service."

DeVenny's History

Roger began his career in high-performance engine building in 1970 at the Speed and Sport Center in Staunton, Virginia, owned by Howard Lickliter. At Speed and Sport he began learning the techniques to create more horsepower. While there, Roger worked closely with IHRA Pro-Stock World Champion Lee Edwards. Roger performed machine work for Lee's Mountain Motor Pro-Stock cars and his other big block Chevrolet customers. In 1980, Roger worked at Lee's shop in Calverton, Virginia.

Roger also pursued his own successful racing career in the early 1970s with a D/Modified Production 1962 330 cubic inch Corvette which ran below the IHRA National Record.

From 1975 to 1982, Roger built large cubic Chevy motors for Tommy Bare. During those years, Roger and Tommy were the most successful dirt track race team in the Shenandoah Valley. The duo won races at Eastside Speedway, Madison, North Carolina; Saluda, Virginia; and Hagerstown, MD. Roger also built engines for a number of other dirt track racers.

In 1984, Roger went into business for himself. He has built hundreds of racing engines ranging from small block engines to 600+ cubic inch Ford and Chevrolet Mountain Motors. Since 1984, Roger continues to build high-performance motors for bracket cars, dirt track cars, and street rods.
