U.S. Marines Order SuperFlow Transmission Dyno

SuperFlow recently completed a large transmission dyno for the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Barstow, California. The dyno can test multiple cross-drive transmissions anywhere from the X1100 transmission out of the M1A1 Abrams tank, to the X200 transmission used in the M113A1 Armored Personnel Carrier.

This particular dyno can run at a maximum of 1,000 hp using its two 500-hp motors to power two variable pumps which in turn drive two variable-speed motors. The dyno can also run at 500 hp using only one motor to conserve energy when maximum horsepower is not needed. It uses a remote power unit which keeps noise levels down inside the test cell.

The machine is also equipped with a remote, self-contained air-to-oil radiator to keep temperatures low, meaning, no water connections are required. The flywheels can create 500 lb-ft of inertia on each side to help simulate part of the M1A1 tank's mass of 69.54 tons. The braking system contains eddy current brakes which do not require any water hookups or subsystem pumps.

SuperFlow's Hicklin brand of transmission dynamometers are in use at military bases around the world. Hicklin has installed over 300 test stands worldwide, including 22 cross-drive test stands in military locations 52 transmission test stands at military bases in total.
