Towing Dynamometers Take Testing on the Road or Test Track

The engineer's choice for thermal development, ECU mapping, and driveline endurance testing
The SuperFlow towing dynamometers were initially designed for use on dedicated test tracks for hill simulation. Many are now towed on public roads between test tracks or are used only for testing on public roads. SuperFlow Technologies Group has incorparated many unique features to improve the performance of towing dynamometers.
  • To run a smooth test, the towing dynamometer must have consistent road contact. To maintain road contact, all our towing dynamometers have lightweight aluminum, independent suspensions with inboard brakes to reduce the unsprung weight and natural frequency of the suspension.

  • The drawbar force measurement system also contains a spring and shock absorber to dampen surges and protect the load cell from damage.

  • An adjustable air suspension sets the ride height and provides a very low natural frequency for smooth pulls over road surface irregularities

  • The aierodynamic body reduces drag for light load tests at high speeds and protects the components from exposure.
Features:
  • Attractive fiberglass body minimizes aerodynamic losses during testing

  • Independent air suspension, in-board brakes, and lightweight aluminum trailing arms and aluminum wheels help keep the tires on the road for more accurate testing

  • Powder-coated frame, yellow zinc-plated hardware help resist corrosion

  • Easy-to-use manual analog control provides accurate control at an economical price

  • Fully automatic digital control system provides extensive sensor input options, preprogrammed computer-controlled hill-simulation tests, and industry-standard WinDyn dynamometer software

  • Available with American or European trailer specification
Applications:
  • Simulate driving up a mountain while on the test track

  • Perform automatic terrain mapping to bring your favorite hills to the test track

  • Perform extended load testing to verify drivetrain durability

  • Reproduce varying load conditions to verify engine drivability

  • Test vehicles "in the elements" without bringing the elements to the vehicle test cell
SuperFlow towing dynamometers allow you to apply a variable load to your test vehicles as you tow them over the road. The towing dynamometer tongue is attached to the vehicle, and the patch cord is attached to controls and instrumentation mounted on the towed vehicle. The trailer applies load through an eddy current power absorber. A precision load cell measures drawbar force. Speed-measuring sensors collect vehicle speed data. The passenger/operator controls drawbar pull in the vehicle to maintain the desired load and speed profiles for a test.

SuperFlow towing dynamometers come fully equipped with trailer lights, reflectors, turn signals, surge brakes, and a vehicle connector plug so you can take them out on the road.* With the optional sensor box and WinDyn™ software, you can perform terrain mapping in the mountains, then use the information loaded in your WinDyn laptop computer to re-run the data on your test track.

Unlike engine and chassis dynamometers, towing dynamometers allow test facilities to take the test vehicle to the environmental conditions, avoiding the extensive costs of bringing the environmental conditions to the test cell.

SuperFlow is the world's leading manufacturer of towing dynamometers.

*Please use extreme caution with all towing dynamometers. Testing requires a driver and a passenger/dyno operator. All testing is done at your own risk. SuperFlow will not be held responsible for any damages or injuries.

Eddy Current Power Absorber Makes Hills

Driven by the axle, an air-cooled eddy current power absorber applies variable load to the test vehicle. The axle is oil-cooled. An alternator driven by a toothed belt off the axle pinion provides electrical current for the power absorber. Speed is measured by sensing the frequency of the alternator stator voltage.

Towing Dynos Precisely Measure Load

A load cell mounted inside the towing dynamometer measures drawbar pull. The trailer hitch is connected to the load cell by a precision shaft supported by sealed precision linear ball bearings. The load cell is mounted in an enclosure under the trailer body rather than in the trailer tongue to reduce solar load.

Drawbar force is smoothed by an internal spring and shock absorber system. An inertia brake system is incorporated in the hitch, actuating a caliper disc brake assembly attached to the pinion flange of the rear axle.

Analog handheld control system
You Choose the Instrumentation and Control System

SuperFlow uses the New Generation Electronics (NGE) data acquisition and control system for its towing dynamometers.

The wireless handheld controller for dyno operation is designed for use with our latest electronics package:
  • LCD touch-screen display panel

  • Quick-touch knobs for entering your test parameters

  • Select and run tests

  • Record and save tests from the vehicle
SuperFlow's computer-controlled data acquisition and control system displays information through WinDyn™ software running on a laptop computer. All test data can be stored on the laptop's hard drive to review later. The sensor input and control box employs a three-axis accelerometer system coupled with speed-based acceleration measurement for highly accurate slope measurements during testing to within 0.001 mega-degrees. WinDyn can display lateral acceleration information.

You can use the computer-controlled system to perform terrain mapping. Take the towing dyno out on the road and sample the terrain, then take it back to the test track to simulate the uphill portions. You can repeatedly run tests of the sampled terrain consistently on your track.

Optional Advanced Instrumentation Features

The seat- or floor-mount instrumentation module consists of a rubber protected input and control box, CPU, analog processing system, and 12vdc power supply:
  • CPU with 1 Motorola 68332 processors, math co-processor, 10mb ram, Ethernet, 3 serial RS 232 ports, 16 TPU frequency channels

  • Analog input, 6 programmable gain channels, 256 multiplexed channels

  • 16 type K thermocouples

  • 10 pressure sensors

  • 8 analog inputs

  • Remote display Barometric pressure sensor

  • Air temperature and humidity sensors

  • Drawbar force input

  • Vehicle speed

  • Engine speed

  • Automated test profiles

  • Up to 60 real time calculated display channels

  • Data collection at rates up to 2000Hz

  • Real time X-T and X-Y screen graphs

  • 10 WinDyn licenses

WinDyn allows import CSV-formatted test profiles created in a third-party spreadsheet computer application. You can also export WinDyn test data for post-processing in your favorite application.
The sensor input and control box includes:
  • Barometer, humidity, and temperature sensors

  • Dash-mounted heads-up display input to present test set point agreement

  • Spark tachometer input (engine rpm)

  • Fifth-wheel input (for precise vehicle speed measurement)

Heads-up Display Helps You Find Set Point

The dash-mounted heads-up display indicates set point agreement with two rows of multi-colored lights for load and speed. During an automated test, the dyno controls one set point; the other display is a visual aid to help the driver actuate the throttle to control the other set point.

Independent Suspension

The TD-1200, TD-2500, and TD-5000 towing dynamometers utilize independent suspension for improved traction. Air bags are used as springs to simplify spring rate adjustment for different trailer weight and tractive-effort requirements. Independent suspension reduces unsprung weight, providing a smoother drawbar pull on rough surfaces.

Lightweight Design

The trailer suspension is fabricated from lightweight alloys to reduce unsprung weight. A streamlined fiberglass body pivots in the rear and is supported by gas-spring struts. The body covers the trailer to reduce drag and enhance the trailer's attractive appearance. Mounts are provided for the addition of ballast to maximize traction for different vehicle weights and power levels.
